The speed sensor can be replaced on each hub. But more than likely there is a build up of rust or corrosion under the mounting plate that is causing the sensor to be less effective. That should be verified first before replacing any parts.

 

Is the bearing making any noise while driving? If so, yes, you need a whole new hub-they come with the sensor.
On mine, at slow speeds, the ABS would engage. Tried cleaning the sensor and had no luck, the whole hub fixed it.

 

I started getting the error when i replaced my struts and links, with the light...pulled the sensor and cleaned it and around the opening, light went away, but actual abs coming on persisted. No sound from the hub, and it was not showing any play when I put my snow tires on...its just being quoted over $600 to replace a hub, let alone something that might be fixed by just a new sensor is infuriating, bordering on criminal....

 

You can buy a new wheel hub, with ABS sensor, for $40-$160. Install is not that hard. ABS sensor, alone, is about $40.

Can you replace the hub bearings your self? If so, they're WAY less than $600 from an auto parts store. As posted above, they are in that price range.
It takes almost as long to get the speed sensor wire in the clips that hold it as it does to change the hub.

One thing to consider if you opt to replace the hub assy by yourself (or buy on your own for someone to install) is the quality of the replacement part. From personal experience, the very cheap ones found on certain auction sites and its major competitor are cheap for a reason.

One was bad out of the box and the other failed within the 30-day return period. The second set failed within the 1 year warranty period, a few weeks apart.

The more widely known brands like AC-Delco, Moog, Timken, and the like have been much better in the long run.

 

The hubs from Detroit Axle found on Ebay have been reported as being pretty good.

i worked in a shop for a while and installed dozens of the masterpro hubs from oreiley go in and maybe 1 come back bad part, most of them come with 1 or two year warranty, its luck of the draw on some aftermarket parts, as far as home install tools required and experience needed are limited but torque on axle nut is important youtube should be loaded with how to's get a 12 pack and someone with a little know how to help and it can be done in an hour or two
