hello fellow members of the trailvoy forums. I am new here and dont even drive a chevy i drive a VW, but the point of the thread is that im gonna borrow my brother's trailblazer 4x4 because wanna go have some fun offroad with my buddies. and obviously i cant in my lowered sportscar.

he has an 03' trailblazer extended version. with the small I6 engine. I am worried however that the TB is too underpowered and heavy to make it through even some simple mud. his is 4x4 and it has the knob with all the different modes like 4-lo and stuff. it is stock... bone stock! so how much can she handle?? below is a link to a video i took today of my friend going thru what i hope to be able to go through in the TB. do not be fooled by the fact he was in 2wd! his tires are brand new and very agresive, plus its lifted.

so would a stock extended TB with the I6 make it through here in 4wd? i dont want to get stuck and be embarrassed. here is the video!

If you are the first one through after it's been untouched for weeks, you do it in 4wd, you don't crawl through it and stop like that guy did and you don't go in again after that first time you MIGHT be ok.

The problem isn't the power as much as how nasty the bottom of that hole is going to be after a bunch of guys go through it. Some OEM all season highway rubber isn't going to provide the traction required to dig through that once it turns to muck. The long wheelbase and lack of ground clearance isn't going to help either.

Be careful, don't beat on it, and if you get stuck have someone winch you out instead of breaking the driveline trying to get it unstuck.

I don't think that our trucks are underpowered either.

I have done most of my off-roading in the desert, but I have also been in muddy situations similar to the one in the video, and I have never been stuck. And, my TB is 100% stock. No upgrades or performance tires.

Your TB would probably be able to do that maneuver in the AWD setting without even having to put in in 4hi or 4low.

While you have the truck, you can try something else that I consider fun. Do a sharp and fast (but safe) U-turn in AWD mode, on a paved road. Since AWD only engages the front axle when it needs to, you usually don't ever feel it engage under normal driving conditions. Doing this sharp and fast U-turn, you can really feel the front wheels kick in after you start the turn, and you feel like your being pulled rather than driving, for a few brief seconds. Kind of fun and neat, well, in my opinion anyways. Doesn't feel the same if you do donuts, only the fast u-turn feels like this.

Also, just FYI...

That "underpowered" and "small" engine, as you referred to it, was named in Wards 10 best engines four years in a row, from 2002-2006.

It is actually an amazing and powerful engine.

"Snappy Powerplant

VORTEC 4.2L DOHC I-6
Engine type: 4.2L DOHC I-6
Displacement (cc): 4,160
Block/head material: aluminum/aluminum
Bore Ă— stroke (mm): 93 Ă— 102
Horsepower (SAE net): 275 @ 6,000 rpm
Torque: 270 lb.-ft. (373 Nm) @ 3,600 rpm
Specific output: 65 hp/L
Compression ratio: 10:1
Application tested: GMC Envoy
Rule No.7 from the Best Engines judging manual states: “Any inline 6-cyl. engine shall enjoy unfair dispensation because it is an inherently wonderful layout.”

For 2003, Ward's editors concoct a corollary: “Any inline 6-cyl. fitted in a truck, SUV or any beast prone to ill-refinement shall enjoy extra-special dispensation.”

Until now, the straight-6 engine was all but forgotten for trucks and SUVs. But last year, GM enjoyed wide acclaim when it pointed its all-new Vortec 4200 4.2L I-6 north/south in its new midsize SUVs. The Vortec proved a snappy, thrusty powerplant, with an excellent balance of power and refinement. GM engineers took advantage of the straight-6 attributes.

For '03, the Vortec comes with a bump in horsepower, 270 to 275. There are detail refinements, including polymer-coated pistons that improve durability and reduce noise, an upgraded cylinder-head gasket and a recalibrated engine management system."
