Very common problem on GM pumps. I just did one on my wife's Astro 4.3 Van for exactly the same reason ... two days ago.
When I was working for a living, I'd see that problem maybe 8 times a year in my shop.
The problem with an Astro Van is that besides power steering, the brakes are hydroboost and that same pump is the power for the brakes.

GM power steering pumps on the envoy/trailblazers/etc snap that shaft when a driver forces the wheel all the way to the extreme left or right. The pressure built up in the rack and pinion gets too extreme for the cheap pot metal to handle and the shaft "snaps" in the weakest spot. When that shaft snaps, you lose "power assist" to your steering.
