I saw similar posts for this, but only for TB. I have a 03 GMC Envoy and last night when I parked, I was unable to take my Key out. I am able to shift without pressing the brake and with the truck off. I did research and see that it looks to be either a fuse, shift lock solenoid or something else in the shifter.

I looked at fuses, but now I am trying to remove the center counsel and having a hard time doing that. I was wondering, is there any way to remove the leather cover at the base of the shifter instead of removing the whole center counsel?

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

The leather squeezes together at the base and should pull right out. If you look on the side of the shifter there is a hole. You will need to stick a T10 toqx bit in the to loosen the screw holding the shifter on. The boot and knob come off as one piece.

Everything works, I unhooked the battery to eliminate it being drained. I hook it up, and I can run everything fine, drive fine as well. Is there anyway to get to the solenoid or do I just bite the bullet and take it in? Any idea on the cost?

I wouldn't jump the gun and start throwing money at parts until something fixes it. I would take it to the dealer(as much as it hurts to say) and make sure it is fixed the first time. I believe you need to fully remove the console to access it if you wish to attempt replacing it, but I am not sure. Part cost is maybe thirty bucks from the local auto parts store.

I also can not remove the key from the ignition without pushing the button in the column. I called napa and they said the solenoid was a dealer item. I called the dealer and they said it was part of the shifter and it costs $115.17. Do you know of a specific parts store that has the solenoid? I cleaned up the contacts in the ignition switch again so I don't think that is the problem. The ign fuse under the rear seat is good, and the battery, while maybe a little slow, starts the truck fine. I do get the click when pushing on the brake pedal while in park.

edit

I drove around the block and it wasn't shifting right, in drive or 3rd it will start out and stay in 3rd. In 1st or 2nd it will start out and stay in 2nd.

Do you lose the ability to edit after 24 hours?

Anyway, it was the ignition switch again. I'll post the list of codes I had when I get it off the laptop.
