Grey Gas Wood Composite material Metal

So I pulled my motor apart to rebuild and this was the timing cover. It's a 2006 5.3 out of an Envoy. Any idea what this metal plate is all about?

GM has used that idea for years --- Ford and Chrysler still hasn't figgured it out.

I'll let you think about it for a while.

It's designed that way for a reason and if you buy a new cover plate, make SURE it's the same design.
