Good morning,

I noticed this morning some water drops on the rear shade in the cargo area (I keep mine closed to cover what's in the back). With all the rain in my area the last few days, I'm thankful it was only a few drops. I narrowed it down to the seal that goes around the liftgate glass. It's not as squishy as it should be and it's very clear where it is leaking from. I can now also hear the rear window rattle somewhat over bumps.

Does anyone have leads on a replacement seal? Or can I get some of the aftermarket stuff from AutoZone and double up or replace the current one?

Also, is there no seal around the CHMSL itself? I can see out looking at it from inside and there's definitely a gap.

Thank you.

Is the original glass installed on your car?
I heard that cheap Chinese rear windows are quite crooked and let water through after rain despite a good seal

This is the factory installed window and seal. I think after 21 years of hot and cold cycles and direct sunlight it's finally lost it's (already thin) sealing ability.

Well, if this is not crooked glass, then it is definitely a seal that has dried up from time to time.
The new spare part is unfortunately no longer available for order.
You need to find a fresher seal in the junk yard.

I figured as much. I was also thinking a more economical approach is to get aftermarket weatherstripping from AutoZone or Home Depot and either put it around the existing seal as a second taller layer, or remove and replace the factory seal with a taller one.

Do you have a part number for the discontinued piece?

I understand your idea.
But I can't tell you what kind of seal is best to buy. Perhaps some of the participants have already done something similar and I hope they will share this knowledge with us

That's what I'm hoping. Or at least measurements so I can get the right aftermarket stuff.

I'm tempted to remove the seal and see what it looks like underneath and how it attaches.

Apparently, 15172768 is the new part number.

The seal is not difficult to remove. Just pull it gently, being careful not to tear the rubber.
By the way, the seal is held on by some kind of sticky white sealant, I recently removed one and was surprised this glue / sealant seemed like it had just been applied at the factory.

Is there a lip on the liftgate and a channel on that seal that it sits in, or is it glued on directly?

I realized now that the part number I shared is for the seal around the entire liftgate itself and not just the window. Disregard.

The rear door has a metal edge on which this seal is put on. It is not strongly glued. You can easily take it off.
Inside the seal there is a metal frame that compresses the edge. If you've ever adjusted a rear door seal, you should know what I'm talking about. Sealant is applied internally for better sealing adhesion and also as corrosion protection.

I see what you mean and thank you for the picture. This is going to make it easier for me to find the right (or close enough to it) replacement. How tall is the seal itself? I can't seem to find an accurate measurement and want to order something tall enough to squish just right when the glass is closed.

Unfortunately, I do not have the exact dimensions (height, width, length) of this seal. What I took off the car was given to my friend and he took it away in his TB.
I understand and thank you for all the information you've provided to me already. I'll pull off a section of the one I have to measure. I already found several possible replacements.

Mike -- I just did a full rubber restortion on a couple of vehicles --- lemme measure the seal on my 05 TB/EXT and see how close any of the leftover stuff I have is - dimension-wise.

Give me an hour or so - unless I see something sparkly and stop what I'm doing to investigate what all the bling is about.

That would be awesome. I'll hold off on my Amazon order.
