I have a 2004 chevy trailblazer and I was just wondering if by undoing the hoses on the bottom and letting the fluid drain out and filling the resover back up was the proper way of doing this

yes it is..

when you fill it back up run the engine at a fast idle and add any necessary to reach the Cold mark..

to bleed the system turn the steering wheel from side to side without going full lock and keeping an eye on the PS level..

once all the air is out turn the steering wheel straight and let the engine run for a few minutes and check the level and add if necessary
