2 yrs ago when I replaced the fluid- I emailed Mobil 1. their response was that their Mobil 1 gear oil DID NOT MEET GM specs and to acquire the lube thru the dealer.
Amsoil did meet GM spec. I dont recall if Royal purple did....

I created a HOW TO CHANGE your differential fluid thread with pics. search for that..
has images like this...

The axle is the same 2wd or 4x4. Amsoil and Royal Purple both meat GM specs and we don't have real limited slip axles, so no additive is required. Having said that, the RP bottle says an additive is in their gear lube.

I have had Royal Purple in both front and rear differentials on my 4x4 LTZ now for about two months. Nice and smooth. No issues.

The front diff is 2.6 pints. The rear is 4 pints or 2 quarts. Trailblazin23 has 2WD.

According to my manual, in the L6
the front differential is 1.7 pints
the rear differential is 3.6 pints

The 5.3 rear differential is 4.3 pints.

So has anybody had problems using amsoil severe gear or royal purple max gear???

Amsoil posted this about severe gear on there website: AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR® is compatible with most limited slip differentials. If limited slip differential chatter occurs, add AMSOIL Slip-Lock™ friction modifier additive.

VS.

Royal purple max gear 75w-90 no additives required it already has it in it

which one do i get???????????????????

THe '03 must be different than the '05. And IIRC the V8 has the 8.5" diff.

Seems to be a horse apiece. Both are good. Pick one and go for it.
the haynes manual says the rear diff is 2.6 pints
I can only say what my owners and service manual say for a 2003. 2.6 Pints front and 2 Quarts rear. In the end it will be what ever fills the differential to with-in 1/4" below the bottom of the hole.
