I would check the camshaft position sensor, if you are taking care of it mechanically and don't feel or hear any unusual sound comimg from the engine I'd start there first, now that the heat season is upon us and the sensors are located on a hot engine they dont last very long they get brittle, if it is an original part chances are the life expectancy is pretty much to an end, after all the sensor is 18 years old, its not so much the miles as it is the age and what type of conditions the vehicle is subject to, like drives in hilly areas, where the vehicle has to work harder with a little more heat output, try that first
