Hi, I have a 6 cyl 2004 Envoy XL w/ 145k on it. Around 50k, I began to see the voltmeter fluctuating between 12 - 14. I saw the lamps dip, and heard the heat / AC fan slow when it happened. No biggie really.

Recently, I have noticed the lamps fluctuate back and forth very quickly (1/8-1/2 second at a time) while the voltmeter drifts lazily back and forth between 14 & 16 volts. The voltmeter seems to spend more time around 14.5 to 15.5 than anywhere else. It will still drop to ~11 or so volts now and then for up to a second before going back to 14 volts, too. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Have your charging system load tested. If your battery is more than 4 - 5 years old, it probably should be replaced. If you have the original altenator, it may be time for a replacement.

Also a good check of connections at battery and alternator.
