AMSoil has oil that can go 15,000 severe driving or 25,000 highway driving if you use their filter with it. Not sure about Mobil1?
oil filter change
I've been in the midst of a "friendly" debate with my father-in-law on oil changes. After doing extensive research on this site and bitog prior to purchasing my wife's 05 EXT, I decided on going with mobil 1 on the oil. I went 8500 miles before fear kicked in and I did the oil change and I'm awaiting UOA to see if the change was overdue or premature. Father-in-law was livid that I didn't change at exactly 3000 miles. He eventually conceded, but held firm that the oil filter should at least be changed every 3k. I've searched the posts and haven't been able to find anything on this. Even if the oil can go longer, is it a good idea to swap the filter more frequently to avoid excess contaminant buildup?

Ive posted 2 oil analysis- one at 104,000 and one at 146,000.
the 104K oil had been in for 10,500 miles
the 146K oil was in for 11,000 miles.... both on REGULAR oil.
The analysis came back fine. THe filter had done its job. I use regular AC Delco filters.

Engines, oil and filters are much better than they were years ago.
I use synthetic and change once a year (real high mileage would get changed more often).
Have done this for each of my last number of vehicles and I always have 200,000 plus at trade.

My OLM light popped on at 13200 miles after 10 months. I am running Mobil 1 full synthetic and a Mobil 1 filter. My dad is still old school too. He changes his at 3000 miles no matter what his OLM says. I guess old habits are hard to change.
I've run the mobil1 filter with the mobil1 oil. He loved pointing out that the oil was black, and was not interested in the concept of heat causing the color change and it being completely unrelated to oil life and protection qualities hahaha. Nice to know I should win the argument when the UOA comes back.
Some filters are better equipped to handle the rigors of extended oil change than others. Fram, for instance, is NEVER going to be more than a 2000-3000 mile filter (and I have my doubts about that mileage!), as they are mostly low-quality components with cardboard end caps that simply turn to mush after more mileage.
The Mobil 1, Amsoil, Wix, NAPA Gold, K&N, etc., are all high quality filters that can easily take 10K service intervals without coming apart or plugging to by-pass.
When I run Amsoil to 20K intervals, I do change filters at mid-point (10K) and add the requisite quart of oil to return to full volume.

A few years ago Consumers Report ran a story on oil changes. I wish I still had the article. Surprisingly, they reported that there was no correlation between the frequency of oil changes and premature engine wear.
Common sense says replacing dirty oil with clean can't be wrong. But how often is up to you. My neighbor retired from Purolator. He says all oil filters are not the same and recommends neither the cheapo nor hi-end filters, just stick to mid-grade. :m2:

The loser should pay for the UOA.:yes: Having said that, it is not a good idea to get on the father-in-laws bad side. There was a great comeback line in The Cutting Edge where the father of an ice skating "ice queen" saw she was upset with her new partner, a former hockey player. Being upset was this girl's normal state of mind, and nothing unusual....Father-in-law was livid that I didn't change at exactly 3000 miles....

So if your Father in law says he doesn't like to see vehicles being abused by extended oil change intervals, justified by extensive manufacturer's analysis and recommendations, now you'll now what to tell him.
