Official Radiator Skid Plate Design Thread!

OK, so here it is... I got the bumper off of the TB last night (for the wife to take to the body shop today, for a small parking infraction she may have had... Scraped another car pulling into a parking spot)

This will probably go from the bottom of the front bumper (the steel part, under the plastic), under the radiator, and to the front of the oil pan skid plate. It will also be mounted to the radiator supports in the location of the stock radiator shield, and have a brace that goes up to the frame, for the larger amount of vertical load. I wanted to go to the bottom of the steel bumper, because the PS cooler is pretty "out there" if I don't... It will have holes in it for the PS cooler. I will probably provide some sticky-backed foam to go under the radiator, and cut down on hot air being sucked through the rad time after time.

This will require drilling (4) holes in your steel bumper support, and it'd be good if you wanted to put 1 hole in each side of your frame (for the vertical load supports, above the radiator), but it won't be required. It will use the same 2 bolts in the rear, that mount the oil pan skid plate, at the front.

It must be noted much like the oil pan plate, that this is protection, but more than likely won't withstand going bonsai through rock gardens at 30mph...

This will fit under the stock Trailblazer front bumper, but I have not been under an Envoy, to check if it will go under the stock Envoy bumper.

These will be made of 3/16" steel, and will be able to be powder-coated (gloss black, mainly, but we can talk about any other "normal" color, and I can see if my P/C guy has any in stock) for somewhere around an extra $30

I'm going to SWAG a GB price in the $230 range, though I won't know for sure until I get it designed and prototyped for mine. I also won't know shipping until I actually get it made...

I have a few questions and ideas to start out...

1. How many people are getting one of these? I don't mean "I think it's a neat idea, and want to up the numbers, like the 6" lift thread"... I mean a serious "you can count on me to buy one of these during the GB" (job situations not withstanding)... Since there's a setup charge to amortize, these numbers are important for the GB price. If not as many people pony up as say they will (per standard Internet forum procedure), I'll have to go around and get an extra $x.xx from people who have already paid. I want to get an accurate count, so that I don't over-charge too much, but I also don't have to go back and get more money from people.

I will add that you can say "I will probably get one, but it depends on finances", but please don't say "I'm in", if you actually mean "maybe"

2. How many people will want one of these, who have any of the GMT-360/370 vehicles that are NOT a "Trailblazer"?

3. How many people who want this, will be leaving their stock bumper cover on? (I'm doing it to fit the cover, but just want to get an idea)

Thanks,
Mike

I'm definately interested, but I would have to see the design to make sure it works with my custom bumper. I don't have the stock steel bumper anymore. Maybe you could look at my bumper in the Gallery and let me know what you think.

Glad your working on it though.

You could make something that would adapt to it, but you'd be better off with a custom one, like I'm making for Bill (his second one), and a couple other people...

I am interested. . . . but what is the cost . . I am kinda broke with a possible move coming up. Let me know, thanks.

Looks good by the way.

It's in the OP, about halfway down...

:eek:fftopic: I LOVE these kinds of typos that pass spell check. (Or were even CAUSED by spell-check.)

I'm sure you meant to say Banzai!

Not this:

Caused by spell check... I had it with a Z, then assumed that since it's a pretty standard word, that spell check would have it if it was right... Guess not...
interesting. I'm still going to have to get the oil pan skid plate before I get that ambitious.
Is this going to be a direct bolt in? or is the user going to have to trim some of the bumper, or drill holes in the bumper support bar?

Interesting concept! Exactly what the Trailblazer needs to protect that pesky radiator!

Edit:
Are you thinking of something similar looking to Mosssr's design?

If you're going to get the oil pan plate, and plan on getting the radiator plate, go ahead and specify the oil pan plate without the front lip, so you just slide it back to chang the oil. (I will suggest that people who get this radiator plate should cut the lip off the front of their oil pan plate)

I don't know yet if it's going to be a direct bolt-in or not... There definately won't be any bumper cutting, though you will have to take out the air deflector that attaches to under the bumper support, as it goes from inside the bumper, all the way back to touching the lower radiator core. That's just a removed part, though, so will be completely reversible.

It is the same idea as Moss's, but (no offense intended) much more complex, more out of the way (i.e., better approach angle), wider, much better supported, and will not require cutting the bumper skin... He went to the top of the bumper support (stressing the bolt threads in tension), went straight down the front to the bottom of the radiator height, then went from there straight back to behind the radiator, and down to the front of the oil pan skidplate, spanning the entire way. (ETA: Let it be known that if he was selling his, I wouldn't even have made the comparison)

Mine will start at the bottom of the bumper support (using the bolts only for lateral load and positioning), where it will bolt into the bottom of the support (may have to drill into the bottom of the bumper support for supplied captive-nuts)... From the BACK of the bumper support (not the front, like Moss's... this is where the approach angle comes in), it will go down to radiator height, level out, and go under the radiator, then transition downward to the front of the oil pan skid plate, then transition back to level to mount to the front 2 bolts of the oil pan plate. Under the radiator will be a welded on stiffening "U" the entire width of the radiator. which will come up at the ends to mount to the holes that the stock radiator shield mounts too (on the inside), and will keep going up to the frame, with a 90-degree bend that sits flat on the bottom of the frame rail. This bend on top will have a hole in it, for if the installer wants to put a bolt into the frame at this point, for more lateral stability.

Mine will be the width of the frame rails from the bumper, back to the rear of the radiator, where it will transition (angle) back to the width of the oil pan skid plate. These transition angles will have flanges folded up on the edges, for rigidity.

yeah... it's going to pretty much "be all it can be"...

I'm going to prototype it out of cardboard and/or 1/4" foam core presentation board, and will post pictures... I hope to get that done this weekend (providing we get the vehicle back from the body shop Thursday or Friday).

Who says we need big companies lol

Who says we need big companies to make products for out platform when we have such sophisticated and awesome members. I def want one but would not be able to get in on the group buy. I'm just hoping you will offer it to people who couldn't make the group buy as I have no job right now and the gf is tired of paying for mods :bonk:.

The price will be higher than the GB price (whatever that ends up being), but they will be available any time (just like the oil pan plates are)

I'm In! Send me UPS tracking number today or tomorrow.

I should wait until you post up pics of the cardboard/ foam board mock up but......

With a SWAG price of $230 + , if the delivered to my door price, including hardware, is $275 or less for an un-power coated version I will absolutly buy one, IF there is no cutting or welding or fabrication on my part required. (I am looking for a bolt-on installation.) According to my wife, I need to be able to use the bumper cover too. Drilling holes is OK though. If the price ends up being higher I will still consider it.

PayPal, money order, or old fashon paper check?

Will the vent holes for the power steering pump spell "Trailvoy Armory" or just be staggered holes as per Mosssr's design?
I already own one of your 6 cylinder oil pan skid plates. May I cut the front lip off myself or do I have to return it to you for this alteration to keep the Trailvoy Armory factory warranty in force?

Cool! Yes, the bumper cover is good to go, and will not have to be cut. Right now, it's just drilling 4 or 6 holes in the bottom of the bumper support, and an optional 2 in the bottom of the frame rail...

For the GB, any of the above... For individual sales, P/P or MO...

Actually, I'm more concerned with sticks and such getting through, so they will be a series of holes, but will be no larger than 3/8" in diameter... My wife having *SOMEHOW* gotten a piece of rebar jammed up under the TB a couple years ago, has really kept me thinking of stuff like that when I design things...

Not only CAN you cut the front lip off... I prefer it! :woot:

It'll look something like this:

The 4 holes in the front are the pass-through holes for the plastic finned press-in fasteners that hold the bottom of the bumper skin still on the bottom side of the bumper support.

Here's one with a representation of the bumper support on it... The bumper support is in black.

BTW, this is not 100% to scale... I just drew it this morning to get across what I'm talking about...

Well, put me down as a maybe. I like the concept.... As for the mounting: will it clear the mounting of my WAAG grille guard? Pics for reference.....

See, this is EXACTLY why I started this thread! I'll revise the rendering at lunch, but yes, it will work...

THANK YOU! I don't have a brush guard, so I wouldn't have known that...

Mike
Note, not all brush guards mount the same as the WAAG... perhaps other members with guards can chime in with pics of their mounting?

That would be great!

BTW, thinking about it, I can say that it won't hit where the WAAG mounts, but I can't see anything any farther inboard, in front of the radiator... If the WAAG stays outside the frame rails, other than the mounting in the pictures, it'll be fine... ETA: looking closer at the picture, I think we're cool...
