Yea...more MPG!

FREE PRESS WASHINGTON STAFF

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration will announce on Friday a combined car and light truck fuel economy standard for the 2011 model year of 27.3 miles per gallon, presaging a much broader reworking of fuel efficiency rules later this year.

The administration is required to set the standard before the end of the month under the 2007 energy law. President Barack Obama has ordered officials to rework proposed standards for model years 2012 to 2016 to comport with plans for economy-wide restrictions on global warming gases.

In addition, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expected to allow California and other states to set their own standards within months.

The Bush administration had prepared its own fuel economy standards but decided not to put them into place, deciding the costs to do so were too high because of the economic turndown and the struggles of Detroit automakers.

The 2011 standard is an increase of 2 m.p.g. New cars will need to meet a 30.2 m.p.g. standard, while light trucks, including sport utility vehicles, must hit 24.1 m.p.g.

Automakers expect to easily meet the 2011 standard and have raised no objections.
