Long story short - I need a new engine due to a nasty rod knock. I have found quite a few in the local area thanks to car-part.com. I really want to stay away from 2002-03's due to piston slap and sleeve issues. How can I verify if the 2005 engine the salvage yard has is really an '05? I have searched the threads but can't find the answer. Is there a cast date code similiar to what is found on V8's or do the numbers above the barcode found near the front on the drivers side tell the story? If so, how do I decipher?
I have also read about the upgrades the '06 engines received. Will an '06 work in my 2003 TB? Or will the higher compression and other things throw off the PCM? Looks like I'll just be buying a long block and swapping over all of the accessories. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!!

There should be a bar code sticker at the rear of the valve cover on the drivers side. ( Kind of like a VIN sticker)

The first digit should be a "V"

The second is the build year

Third and fourth are the build month

Fifth and sixth are the build date ( I'm assuming this is the build day)

And the last 4 are the build sequence.

This onfo is from the 2003 Service Manual.

You might be able to see it with a mirror.
