If you mean the engine won't start but it DOES crank - yes try the battery trick. It may also be a coincidentally blown fuel pump fuse or many others.
If it fails to crank, but the lights come on and the battery gauge reads 12V or so, you might have a bad ignition switch. It's a high failure rate item, and easily available cheaply at the parts stores.
When it ran out of fuel, did you run the battery down? Were there any other bad things happening that caused you to run out of fuel? I never understood how that was possible unless you had a broken fuel gauge AND odometer at the same time.
