I don't get it. If you put in the max you're willing to spend, you don't need to watch the auction. Unless a last minute sniper might cause you to raise your bid, in which case you should have raised it when you first bid because it wasn't your REAL max.

Am I missing something? If it goes above the max you're willing to spend, even by a penny, there shouldn't be any regrets.

The mob psychology of auctions (and the power of last minute snipers to annoy us) was taken away by automatic bidding.

What did the bid get up to.

Heck of a deal. One sold on June 3 for $27, if you're looking for regrets to collect.

If it makes you feel better, the other person may have bid $200, you don't know. All you know is that the next bid amount above your (highest) bid was $0.99, bringing the total sale to $60.99. You may well have bid $75 after that, and if the otther person put a max bid of $150, the total would have been $75.99 and you would still have lost. And using your theory, you would have still lost by $0.99

It's the proxy bidding that did you in. I am 99.99% you did not lose by just $0.99, but that's how it looks on paper.
