i took a 600 mile round trip drive up in pa. a couple months back. while up there my dad and i both noticed the smell of old gear oil, but it was only occasionaly then. i can still smell it now 2 months later and i cant find any signs of a leak anywhere. the smell seems to be stronger around the drivers side front tire (rarely the smell comes inside).
has anyone else had this experience or know what may be causing this? any help would be much appreciated as i dont really have the money to take it in for a further diagnostic check.

Sounds like your front diff is leaking gear oil. Check the fluid level and for a leak around and near the axle housing. It could be tossing the fluid back or up on the block.
