Getting that Diff Seal out...

Changed out my Driver(left) side CV axel this weekend. Was expecting it to be a more of a pain than it was. One of the sticking points discussed was that Diff Seal. After trying a couple different methods talked about on here I found the easiest way for me to get it out was with a claw hammer. Took about 20sec at most. Just maneuver the hammer in there so you can get some leverage then get the claw/tines just under the lip of the seal with the head resting on the opposite side of the opening. Give a solid steady yank and it should pull out one side. Spin the hammer around and do the same on the other side and by the third time it should pop right out.

Just changed my left hub bearing 2 days ago and today I did the CV axle........still hums at 30+ mph. So now I am going to look at the driver side. I hope it's just the axle bearing and not the whole diff.


I wish I had known about this seal before today. I would have changed it while doing the axle. There is a small leak but not bad so I will do it later.

help to get home

am i able to drive my tb home from work about half hour away with little or no oil in the front diff. with making anymore major damage?

The grease can be topped-off without even jacking the vehicle up. Turn the front wheels all the way to the left.

I use a long-handled 1/2" ratchet, a long extension, and an 18mm swivel socket. A regular socket and universal joint would work almost as well.

A pint of grease can be poured or pumped into the differential, if you're willing to crawl on your back.

All of this is preferable to driving the unit with little or no grease. OTOH, as long as you stay out of AWD or 4WD, there's little load on the unit. MAYBE you'd be OK. I wouldn't recommend it, though.

I would NOT drive with the differential empty or nearly empty in one of the Trailblazer cousins that cannot be put into 2WD mode.

Great thread; made seal replacement relatively easy - Thanks All! However, now that seal is in, having a tough time getting the axle (driver side front) to seat. Is there a trick to re-installing the thing? Can a rubber mallet be used on the hub end of the half shaft assy.? The factory manual just says to push it in. I've pushed and pushed, it hasn't seated. Thanks.

Any chance the differential side gear is out-of-position because the driveshaft or axle shaft(s) rotated?

Thanks for reply. I locked it in 4WD to feel splines lining up and whacked it with a mallet. Now together, will test drive today.
