Dear Mr. Zombie ...................

I guess by now that you've learned that the pump and sending unit are the same thing - or you're dead by now and this is a moot post anyway.

Either way --- why do you like to run below 1/4 tank of fuel? You said it's mostly empty all the time. That just kills the poor pump - because it needs the gas covering it to lubricate and cool the bearings. At about 1/4 tank, it starts to emerge from the fuel level.

AND quit worrying about the filter in the tank.

ALL the time the pump runs, it's drawing fuel from the bottom of the tank - and true to it, I have NOT SEEN anything substantial inside modern fuel tanks - maybe since 1995 or so.

OK --- mebbe a tiny plastic shaving - but it cannot get into the pump.

I'd be more worried about itinerant monkeys getting their feet stuck in the filter than to worry about a non-problem.

Doh! You don't actually live near any monkeys - do you? If so - forget my last part. But I hear Canada's full of monkeys - be vewwy careful!)

My job is done here --- driving stakes in these old zombie threads.
