One thing you will definitely need to get is a decent code reader/live data scanner. I see where you reference going to AutoZone to get the codes read and then they sold you a part that your mechanic friend says you do not need. That is the thing about Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) - they never tell you that a part is bad. They tell you that a circuit or a system is not working properly. The cause of the problem could be a poor electrical connection, a broken wire, a cracked vacuum line, a defective part, etc. A DTC is letting one know where to begin the diagnostic process.

If you have an Android device, you can get a very capable code reader/live data scanner comprised of a Bluetooth OBDII dongle and the Torque Pro app. Total cost is under $25 for this setup. Here is the link for the Bluetooth OBDII dongle:

and you can get the Torque Pro app for a one time licensing fee of $5.00 from the Google Play store.

When working on modern vehicles, it is very important to first retrieve the DTCs from the vehicle.

Good Luck!

@ak342058 - Welcome to the Forum!

Please start a new thread rather than shirt tailing on a thread. That way we can focus on you and your vehicle's problem.

Please remember to include Year, Make, Model, Sub-Model, Trim Level, Engine, any and all Diagnostic Trouble Codes, and a complete description of your vehicle;s problem.

Now for a couple of questions for when you start you own thread. Do you own a Digital Multi-Meter? Do you have a decent code reader/live data scanner (by decent I do not mean expensive)? Also, are you going to do your own maintenance/repairs?

Thanks and looking forward to assisting you!

@ak342058 -

I know it doesn’t make sense but the vvt. Variable valve exhaust circuit runs on same circuit. Some nazi posters here still don’t know and can’t seem to help or want millions of details
Exactly what in the "...Variable valve exhaust circuit..." is on the "...same circuit." - the VVT solenoid, the camshaft position sensor, the camshaft actuator?

Additionally, exactly what circuit are you referring to?

If you know something that we do not know, then in the spirit of sharing and educating those of use who use the forum, please share it with us.

@miss_rae just so you are aware, beginning with the 2005 model year, GM incorporated the fuel pressure regulator into the fuel pump module assembly, and is no longer serviceable as is is with the 2002 - 2004 model years. Also, GM did away with the external fuel tank fuel filter. That too was incorporated into the fuel pump module assembly.

Sorry to make you sweat!

Yup. Know exactly what you mean!
