02 Envoy XLT 4x4 169K miles.
Background:No current issues. No oil leaks, driveway is clean. Yesterday(15 degrees outside) started vehicle with remote start. Car ran for 10 minutes and stopped as it is programmed to do. We came out a few minutes later jumped in started up and drove 12 miles to the movies. As we pulled into the theater parking lot I could smell something. We parked and popped the hood and observed engine compartment bathed in oil.
Both passenger and driver sides of engine covered in oil. Tips of fan blades oil covered. It appeared to be a good quart of oil on all the surfaces(small puddles in the "valleys" of various parts). So much oil everywhere the source was not obvious but there was so much oil it should be obvious.
With that much oil it would had to have been a spray and not just a trickle. Something must have catastrophically failed. I wondered if something punctured the oil filter. Restarted the motor and I could not see the source of the leak. I was down 2 quarts of oil but appeared to not be losing any more that I could tell. WTF?
Got the Voy home and starting cleaning her up. Engine de-greaser and a power wash(careful to avoid alternator). Made a few short trips of 1, 2, 5, 10 miles to get it hot while stopping to check for leaks. Nothing, zilch nada. WTF?
As I wrote in the title this is the 2nd time this has occurred. Twelve months ago I had the bad camshaft position actuator problem(code p0014??). Thanks to this website I replaced it but while waiting for the part to arrive my wife had the same "engine oil dump" scenario happen while I was away. No leaks before hand, 2 quarts of oil sprayed in the engine compartment, no leaks after. WTF? I could not explain it so just I attributed it to the camshaft position so out of whack that it... OK I had no idea but was just glad it "went away".
$Set Wild_Speculation=on
Your thoughts on what the failure mode is where 2 quarts of oil are dumped and the problem then goes away as fast as it came. Twice.
PS Oil was last changed by a drive-up place 1000 miles back. Oil filter is so tight I cannot remove it by hand. Surface around oil cap is/was dry. Dip stick and holder seated properly.
