Does anyone know how you shut down traction control

Well, there's several ways but the easiest and the most crude way is to pull the ABS fuse. Our ABS and T/C are in the same unit. I'll ask one of the tech's in the garage how they do it for development.

However, if you do pull the abs fuse you lose your rear brake proportioning and your rear tires WILL lock up on you under a hard decel. Not good.

I wouldn't recommend it. To many things can go wrong.

I also thought traction control was only available on the 2WDs. On 4WD models traction is taken care of by the 4x4 system if engaged. Maybe you mean the "torque management" system that limits power when taking off from a start?

On the 2WDs I'm pretty sure traction ctrl can be programmed to be automatically turned on or off when the ignition is turned on.

You guys are right. Traction Control (TC) is only available on 2wd models as an option.

Although TC is on by default every time the truck is started, it can be disabled on trucks that are equipped with it by pressing the "OFF/ON" button where the 4x4 selector would otherwise be.

Here's what my switch looks like:

The little ''!" flashes when TC is engaging, and the TC with the "/" through it is lit when TC is off.

No, you can't program the T/C to "not come on" with the ignition.
I know it sounds strange but the '02-04 service information says you can:

Programming the Traction Control Automatic Engagement Feature
The automatic engagement feature may be programmed so that the traction control system activates or does not activate automatically at the start of each ignition cycle.

The procedure involves pressing the traction control switch and the brake/gas pedal in a certain order. I can post it here if anyone wants it.

I don't know anyone who's actually tried this so can't comment on if it works. In my opinion it's in your best interest to leave traction control on anyway. That is unless you're at the track, but that's not something most ppl are going to do with a TB/Envoy...except for the TB SS anyway! :D

I would like to know that procedure. I usually turn off traction control after I start the vehicle anyway, unless weather conditions warrant leaving it on.

It might just be me, but I think it slows response to throttle input even more with yet another computation in the throttle by wire system. I think I can tell a difference in response with it off, but again, might just be me.

I do turn it back on if it rains or snows, but wouldn't mind it being off by default to begin with. With all the torque management programed into the I-6, I can't see a need for the TC in normal driving conditions.

Funny you should mention this. I was at Milan Dragway as part of a car show. The guy who organized the show and I decided to run our SUV's for a joke down the track. He had an 05 Explorer with a V-8 in it. I smoked him. I ran a 17.73 second quarter mile at 78.96 mph( all this was on the ticket from the timers shed). The announcer had a good time hassling us.

I don't like the traction control in my '02; I don't like that it totally cuts out the power, and the duration is too long. I think in certain situations it could actually be more dangerous to have it activate. Maybe its good for someone who can't tell that they've lost their rear end and can't feel a fishtail coming on.
