Cruise & Temp gage stop working.

I have a 2004 4.2. Here about 2 weeks ago the temp gage in side would stop working, goto zero. Then in 5, or 10 min. it would start working. When it stops working it throws the truck into a higher rpm wile at adle. Also the cruise control is experiencing somewhat the effect. It will turn its self off and in 5 to 10 min it will be working. I think it may be a grounding issue, but am unsure where to start.
Thank you much.

Welcome to the Forum!

First, what Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are present? We do need to know this.

Second, are any of the other instrument panel gauges operating in a flaky manner?

Third, are you going to do the repair yourself or have it done for you? If you are going to do it, do you have a decent code reader/live data scanner and a Digital Multimeter (DMM)? (These are absolutely necessary tools and they do not need to be expensive by the way.)

Now depending on your answers, the following should be considered to be a WAG (wild @$$ guess) - it sounds like a bad engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor or something in the wiring between it and the Engine Control Module.

Please respond so we can confirm or come up with a more accurate diagnosis.

Good Luck!

Hmmmmm ... monoparagraphs again ......

find and open connection package td-3349-l1 and find the red wire with the blue tracer and inserting a backstab probe into the wire channel take the voltage reading as you cycle the ignition switch from off to crank three times in five seconds and read the peak voltage for those cycles then take that number and divide it by the number of lugnuts on the total of all your wheels not including the spare and the product of that will be the surge value which you must write down for future reference is for the flux capacitor that is located behind the passenger seat on the right side near the floor and the seatbelt attachment point then key that 8-bit boolean value you got from the computation you made before into the keypad of your bidirectional scanner to unlock and gain access to the dilithium crystals compartment after you removed all your street clothes and substituted them for the nasa approved 5-mk-11 hazardous material handling and radiation protection suit that is actually only good for a 3 second exposure and after that will render you sterile and not able to reproduce which is ok since then there will be one less gravid person writing with their thumbs on a make believe keyboard that is too much trouble to shift to get to the periods commas and quotation marks and does not have a shift key to type in uppercase letters and certainly is too much trouble to start a new sentence or even a new paragraph that might enable people to actually read what you are asking
