I haven't been able to find a thread on this so here goes:

Last weekend I took my 2002 Chevy Trailblazer LTZ 4.2 I6 on a camping trip involving hours and hours on dirt and gravel roads. The results is this thick sandy oily residue on lots of the engine parts. I feel compelled to spray some cleaner on everything and then hose it down while the engine is running but I am worried about which parts I should be careful with, or potentially cover up before doing so. All the electronic harnesses? The alternator? Etc.

Can someone tell me the do's and don't's for cleaning the whole engine bay for this particular vehicle/engine? Or point to an existing thread on the subject, if that exists.

Thanks!

Claus
