He came in with a bad rattle which I found out was the belt tensioner.

I replaced it and plugged in my scanner to check a CEL for him --- a P0300 - multi-cylinder misfire.

I HATE P0300s because they are so secretive and hard to diagnose. But I ran a few tests and everything was actually OK ..... <huh?>

Now --- he's had this 'mystery P0300 for years and nobody - no shop - no drunkard from a sidewalk tent could fix it.

But I did!

What'd I do? I just replaced the belt tensioner! That's all......... I hate mystery things that repair themselves too! Did I mention that?

Got me thinking --- here's the dangerous part ---- thinking ----

Could -- somehow --- the belt tensioner allow the belt to slap at every cylinder firing and the ECM saw that slap as a misfire?

So ---- I just hadda know - and I put the old tensioner back on --- in two blocks the P0300 code was reset!

Ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I put the new tensioner on, cleared the P0300 and it never came back .....

Whataya think of that?
