I'll be driving along with the A/C set on Auto at 68* and all of the sudden the dash vents shut off and no air comes out of them at all. No matter what I do, they will not blow air again. Unless I turn the A/C off for a few minutes then I can turn it back on and it will be fine. When I hit the A/C off button the dash vents come back on about 30 seconds later. If I dont' wait long enough to turn the A/C back on it will kill the dash vents. The same thing happens with the floor and defroster vents as well.
I haven't changed out the fan clutch and I'm thinking I might change out the Low pressure switch just for good measure. Does anyone have any other ideas?
Well, a fan clutch failure, if it went into free wheeling mode, would affect cooling when the vehicle's at rest, not when it's moving. The low pressure switch would affect AC compressor cycling, but so would low fluid charge caused by a leak. I see no reason to shotgun the troubleshooting when you can do it scientifically.
You're not describing the problem very precisely when you say "cold air stops" and also "dash vents shut off and no air comes out of them at all."
If no air comes out of the dash vents, defroster vents, OR the floor vents, might it be a fan problem? Do you hear the circulation fan at all? Can you control the fan normally to high, and does it run, or cut out, when the problem happens? Does the fan still run, but the air turns hot instead of cold?
The mode actuator motor moves a door to send air through the various choices of ductwork, but I don't see in the shop manual a position that would deny air to all of the ducts at once. You sure it isn't the circulation fan cutting out?
A failure like this could be setting all sorts of DTC codes. Do you have a code reader to see if any are set?
