If I change the tires from 255/50/20 to 275/45/20 will the ride be as smooth or will it be rougher with the same tire?

While I can't compare those two sizes I can tell you that my Hankook 275/45/20 tires ride just as smooth as the original tires, Michelin 245/65/17.

The ride is rougher, but it is barely noticeable. If you are worried about it then just get 265/50R20's and the problem is nonexistant

My Hankooks at 275/45-20 ride on par with the Michelin 245/65-17s, but are MUCH quieter. My 20s had [email protected] tires originally and they were harsher, noisy and scary as hell on a cold wet road. The ride, noise and grip are more a factor of the individual tire than the sizing. Some 275/45 will ride worse than your current 255/50s, other will ride better.

They ride about the same, but It depend on tire Construction.

The Stock Goodyear 255/50/20 on the Trailblazer SS are a bit soft, but ride nice. I have had 275/45/20 Hankook and loved them.. I really hated the 275/45/20 Kumhos.. They where noisy as hell on the highway,

A few members are running 265/50/20 Hankooks and they ride great.

I am running 265/40/22 Hankooks and love them. They are quiet and smooth.
