05 envoy won't crank, then a little while later it cranks but won't start. Then a bit later it starts and runs fine.
When it would crank but not start I tried starting fluid. Wouldn't start. Took it to 2 mechanics and they have no idea. It is running fine now but may die and not start at any time. Hoping someone can help.

Welcome to the Forum!!

Sorry to hear about your no crank troubles. A couple of questions first that need to be answered. What engine is in your Envoy? How many miles. Did the mechanics do a battery load test or a starter current draw test? If they did, what are the results. Are there any OBDII codes present? When this happens is the engine dead cold (as in the morning after being parked all night), when the engine is hot (as in it's been run for a while and is up to normal operating temperature), are the battery cable to battery connections tight and not loose, are the battery cables connections clean and tight?

Now, just to jump ahead since you seen to be a nice person, if all of the above turns out to be normal, then I would have to say the ignition switch is suspect. These are known to go bad and it's more a question of when will they go bad as opposed to if they will go bad. If you replace it or have it replaced for you, be sure to use a quality part and not a white box $1.99 special from amazon or ebay. We recommend using a part from GM Genuine/ACDelco, Delphi, Standard Motor Products (non T series), NAPA Echlin, or BWD (non P series).

Good Luck!

Like he said (^) --- ignition switches can be thermally sensitive.

Also - your problem can be a slightly bad ground --- somewhere --- hidden and like it or not, it will be the last thing you test when you DO find it.

Grounds get thermal PMS too.

Battery cables clean 'n' tight? Battery terminals shiny silver, not fuzzy green or just black?
